ESG Investment
Program Overview

See how ESG strategies enable investors to reap the benefits of responsible, sustainable business and promote positive change through company engagement, proxy voting and raising awareness of ESG issues.

ESG is now definitively mainstream. Climate change, plastic pollution and inequality among other issues are not only filling news headlines but are also increasingly shaping investors’ decisions. Once seen as an ethical or values-based decision, considering ESG factors in the investment process is now commonly driven by financial motives.

At ClearBridge, we believe companies with positive (ESG) attributes are well positioned to outperform their peers over the long term. That’s why our Sustainability Leaders Strategy invests in high-quality companies that meet our financial and sustainability/ESG criteria, or that are making substantial progress toward becoming a leader in sustainability and ESG policies.

Investing to make an impact can be achieved through strategies that integrate ESG factors into the stock selection process. This enable investors to reap the benefits of responsible, sustainable business and promote positive change through company engagement, proxy voting and raising awareness of ESG issues.

"Environmental, social and governance is now definitively mainstream."

ClearBridge remains at the forefront among asset managers in ESG investing, receiving the highest A+ overall rating from the United Nations-supported Principles for Responsible Investment. We have over 30 years’ experience in promoting and communicating the benefits of including ESG factors when selecting investments and building portfolios.

Our experience demonstrates that an active, long-term commitment to ESG integration is good business. We hold companies for seven years on average across our portfolios. This approach naturally aligns with a focus on sustainability and puts the firm in a privileged position to engage with invested companies, encouraging better ESG practices over time.

As part of the integration into our fundamental research process, we calculate and assign our own ESG ratings to every company in our coverage universe. We use those ratings to track progress toward stated goals over time and drive engagement with the companies we own.

Our annual Impact Report offers a comprehensive look at how ESG principles are shaping our current investment choices and returns.

The value of investments and the income from them may go down as well as up.
