Climate change is one of the most challenging issues of our time and protecting and preserving our environment is of paramount importance to Legg Mason as well as to many of our shareholders, clients, business partners, and employees. We promote active engagement on sustainability among our global colleagues and continually work to embrace positive steps to protect the environment.
From an investing perspective, we also understand the relevance of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors to well-run companies and to the long-term health and stability of the markets, We have been working in the ESG space for close to 30 years and our largest equity affiliate, ClearBridge Investments, is an industry leader. Approximately 13% of our total long-term assets under management is in ESG/socially responsible investment strategies.
Key Environmental Initiatives
Corporate Social Responsibility Report: The Corporate Social Responsibility Report provides an update to our many stakeholders on the programs and activities we offer in all areas of sustainability.
CDP: We are a member and signatory to CDP and have attained a position on the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index for the third time.
Leadership in Energy Efficiency & Design (LEED) Certification: Our corporate headquarters in Baltimore has achieved LEED Certified Gold for the space it occupies in Harbor East, while the base building has achieved US Green Building Silver Certification.
Sustainability Council: Legg Mason has an officer led Global Environmental Sustainability Council which leads the Firm’s environmental initiatives in conjunction with our Corporate Citizenship team. The Council’s Executive Sponsor is CFO, Pete Nachtwey.
Environmental Volunteerism: Our signature environmental volunteerism program is the Firm’s participation in an oyster garden program at our headquarters location. The goal of the program is to foster growth of the declining oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay.
Best Practices: Our London office has implemented various best practices environmental initiatives including a wildlife roof and zero landfill waste, among other initiatives.
