About Us
Environment
As a global asset manager, Legg Mason is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen and has a strong focus on sustainability and the environment. Climate change is one of the most challenging issues of our time and protecting and preserving our environment is of paramount importance to Legg Mason as well as to many of our shareholders, clients, business partners, and employees. It is critical that we collectively work towards viable environmental solutions and make improvements now for a more sustainable future. We promote active engagement on sustainability among our global workforce and continually embrace positive steps to protect the environment.
Global Reporting Initiative
Legg Mason is working with leading partners in industry, government and the non-profit world to ensure that our sustainability practices meet global standards. We have produced our first sustainability report based on Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines.

Carbon Disclosure Project
One of our important actions to deliver on our commitment to corporate responsibility is our role as a member of, and a signatory to, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a collaboration of leading global companies that is working together to create more corporate disclosure around environmental practices by gathering data from over 1,500 companies worldwide. We participated in CDP6 (CDP's 2008 survey) as a first-time respondent in 2008 in the reporting of carbon emission risks and opportunities, emissions accounting, plans to reduce emissions, and governance.
In Fall 2008, CDP released its Global and S&P 500 reports based on responses to its annual survey, and ranked Legg Mason among the top ten participating financial services firms in the 2008 S&P 500 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index. Legg Mason received a survey score of 89 compared to the average for the financial services sector at 59.6.

Additional Green Initiatives
Our new corporate headquarters in Baltimore was developed to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy Efficiency and Design) certification while our second largest office in The New York Times Building in New York City, has incorporated many LEED elements. We continue to look for ways to reduce our carbon footprint in our day-to-day business operations in our locations around the world.
We have an officer-level Green Council addressing the company's Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives and setting policy, particularly regarding energy and material use. Over the past year, our recycling programs have expanded and we have come up with new ways to save energy. We also have a network of Corporate Citizenship leaders in each location that support the firm's environmental initiatives and solicit important feedback and suggestions from our associates.
We consider the environment to be a priority at Legg Mason and we remain dedicated to making continued progress in our environmental protection efforts in the many global communities in which we live and work.
